Many people are not very clear about Yoga vs Meditation. We often hear people say “I am meditating” or “I am doing yoga.” Sometimes they intend to suggest the same, while other times they may be talking about drastically different things.

First, we must understand the two words and where they come from. I will start with the word Yoga. Yoga is an ancient Sanskrit word, which means “union.” This union means the connection between the soul (the individual) and the Spirit (God or the universe). Yoga is not only the word to describe this state of union, but it is also the means to achieve this state of the union.

Today, we are looking more closely at the differences and similarities between yoga and meditation.

Yoga reached the western world in the 19th century, but it had been an essential part of everyday life in India for centuries. In his homeland, yoga is a discipline impregnated with the Hindu religion.

Modern western yoga, especially in the United States, is primarily a secular practice, enjoyed both for physical exercise and for spiritual development. No matter where it is practiced, yoga incorporates breath control, physical postures and a mental state called meditation.

In the simplest terms, meditation is like exercise for the mind (not like those little brain games or trivia apps on your phone). Meditation helps you develop concentration, calm and an emotionally positive way of being and looking at the world. Meditation is often equated with prayer and, if you take away the details, the similarities become clear.

Types of meditation:

There are different meditation techniques to adapt to different purposes:
1- conscious meditation
2- Reflective meditation
3- Mantra meditation
4- Focused meditation

What is the relationship between meditation and Yoga?

You can meditate at any time, at work, sitting in traffic, while brushing your teeth or, if you want to do it traditionally, sitting quietly in a quiet area of your home. Yoga, on the other hand, requires a little more space, since it involves moving your body to a series of different physical postures. However, developing a better internal focus and concentration is a central aspect of most yoga practices.

Yoga is an activity, which helps a lot to maintain physical fitness and peace of mind. Some popular facts that are associated with yoga are comprehensive fitness, better posture, greater immunity and energy, weight loss and stress reduction. It can also be considered as a combination of various exercises and movements.

But in meditation, exercises or physical movements are not included. An individual simply sits in a specific place and focuses on the energy flow line in the body. Meditation is considered as part of yoga, which is mainly done after the practice of yoga.

3- Inner peace and happiness remain in the mind.
